The City of Onalaska Parks and Recreation Department with help from the UW Extension office is happy to announce that our 2014 Onalaska Tree Symposium will be covering the invasive species Emerald Ash Borer, also known as EAB, on March 26, 2014
Our 2014 Symposium will consist of multiple sessions. The first session is classified as an Industrial and Municipal Workshop. This workshop is held for area vendors and businesses associated with the urban forestry industry and municipalities. Here, state and local experts will be covering a vast amount of information related to the EAB species including its life cycle, how to control its spread, the quarantine rules and regulations, utilizing the infested wood, municipal strategies, the benefits of trees in our landscape and more. This information is considered to be critical to those individuals who are working in the urban forestry field as the invasive species is normally spread by people who are ill informed about the beetle and its presence. This workshop will run from 9:00am until 2:00pm with lunch being provided. Registration forms for this upcoming event can be found as an additional document. Seats for this workshop will be reserved in the order registrations are received, so pre-registration is strongly encouraged. On-site registration will also be taken the day of the event if spaces are available.
The next two sessions will be available at no charge to all the members of the general public. We highly recommend area land and home owners attend and participate in these two sessions. The first of these sessions is a Vendor Exhibition Hour that will feature area resources, state associations, and private businesses. If you have any questions as to who can answer some of your questions right now, or in the future, this is the place for you! Come to this free hour to network with some knowledgeable people and businesses that can help you with all of your urban forestry needs and questions.
Immediately after our Vendor Exhibition Hour, we will be hosting a Home and Land Owners Information Session. This free session will run from 6:00pm until 9:00pm and will provide the citizens with the information required to make smart and sound decisions regarding the trees on their property. Some of this information includes a city of Onalaska update on EAB., the insects life cycle, how to identify an ash tree, signs and symptoms of an infestation of EAB., control measures that can be used, what to look for when hiring a contractor, quarantine rules and regulations, the benefits of your trees, and more.
All of the above information will be presented by some of the state’s best resources. These guest speakers include Dr. Chris Williamson from UW Madison’s Entomology Department, John Duplissis and Dr. Richard Hauer from UW Stevens Point, and Christopher Deegen from the Wisconsin Department of Ag, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCAP).
